“An attempt to build a decentralized autonomous network system expanding "theory-of-life" reality.
Info-sphere that emerges traffics crossing among every observation dimension.
Seeking new Perspectives to reinterpret the human, mind and feeling, and computation and nature. ”

This work, "Observer n", is a multi-dimensional network consisting of multi-autonomous observers. The observers are every inhomogeneous and autonomous systems, including originally designed devices, software agents and audiences themselves. Those observers organize themselves to build integrated systems with similar complexity levels. Furthermore, the multi-level integrated systems interplay to show life(or biotic) system behaviors.

The life phenomena depend on complicated and non-linear interactions, while it has multi-dimensionally nested structure of the each various time scale and level system. Each system perceives “Umwelt” for the each and works in the each time. All of them including audiences are observers.

The observations here refer to the ones of the internal measurement theory. The internal observations themselves are acts to recognize partners by material interaction. Due to the interaction nature, the each observer will also change. A principle should not allow the immutable external-observation, in more detail, the observation like God, which can overlook all status instantaneously from outside, by assuming the absolute separation of the objects and the observer. The observation is an act, which may be equivalent to natural computation in the sense of molecular calculus.

"Observation natural" allows audiences only partial overview, but not full, to remind them to be internal observers at certain levels in some systems. They are unable to stay at a certain level, but will cross various observation dimensions.

YCAM version

This work is a multi-dimensional network system with complicate interacts by autonomous system of nested structure. Four different leveled system has been developed for this version. The each system generates information by the interactions with their environments to communicate with the systems in other levels.

The main communications are divided into generation of the computational resources to other systems, which are defined as lower level and activity inhibitory requests from other systems, or higher level. When an autonomous system of single level is considered as an individual, the multi-level networks behave as a whole.

History of the project

This project, or "Observer n", has been proceeded by evolutional framework with recurrent optimization and selection of basic observer models. It was launched in 2008 and updated Proto 1 to 4, then YCAM version in 2012.

As the viewer peers at this work through a microscope, the dedicated software takes the process of generating space as a model and visualizes it on a liquid crystal display the size of a fingernail. Countless objects keep emerging and disappearing to create …dots, lines, planes, solids, and supersolids… .

Goh Uozumi - Artist

With algorithmic installations and live performances, Goh Uozumi has advocated the thought of using one’s behavior as an interface, and tries to reconsider creativity and achieve augmentation of reality in the networking age. For Uozumi, each autonomous element of computer programs, devices and even participants are inhomogeneous subjects, and he incorporates their relationships into his works. He thus captures existing body, space, time as well as historical contexts in expressions of art as environmental information, not as the object to rely on, and constructs flexible systems.
His main exhibitions include “OBSERVER N” that crosses all dimensions for observation (2012, Solo, YCAM: The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media), “F” that goes across void and perception (2010, Solo, ASK?P).

YCAM - Space

The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) was established in November 2003 as a cultural-arts complex that accommodates a hall for stage performances, an exhibition space, a mini film theatre, and the Yamaguchi City Library. A platform for sharing computer- and IT-based media technology, YCAM hosts among others a variety of theatre and dance performances, art exhibitions, film screenings, sound-related events, workshops and lectures.
YCAM distinguishes itself through being not only a venue for presentations of existing outstanding works, but also a studio in which new, original artworks are produced and unveiled in front of the public. All kinds of artists stay in Yamaguchi, where in collaboration with YCAM's expert staff they explore the possibilities of creative work. Many of the artworks created at the "YCAM InterLab", the Center's section for artistic production, have been highly valued not only here in Japan, and received countless invitations to be part of exhibitions and performing art events in cities around the globe.
